Probabilsitic semantics and defaults

چکیده
There is much interest in providing proba-· bilistic semantics for defaults but most ap proaches seem to suffer from one of two prob lems: either they require numbers, a problem defaults were intended to avoid, or they gen erate peculiar side effects. Rather than provide semantics to defaults, we address the original problem that defaults were intended to solve: that of reasoning un der uncertainty where numeric probability distributions are not available. We describe a non-numeric formalism called an inference graph based on standard probability theory, conditional independence and sentences of confirmation, where a confirms b = coni( a, b) = p(a!b) > p(a). The formalism seems to handle the exam ples from the nonmonotonic literature. Most importantly, the sentences of our system can be verified by performing an appropriate ex periment in the semantic domain.

Hierarchical Defaults in Specifications
The goal of this paper is to explain the usage and semantics of hierarchical defaults in logical specifications. We discuss the usefulness of defaults for different specification scenarios like specialization, aggregation, explanation, revision, etc. To understand defaults formally, we introduce a general framework parameterized on the underlying logical institution extended by an instantiation...

متن کاملOn the Semantics of Supernormal Defaults
Our aim is to clarify which nonmonotonic consequence relation |∼∆ is given by a set ∆ of “supernormal” defaults, i.e. defaults of the form (true : δ)/δ. There are in fact a number of proposals for |∼∆ (e.g. the skeptical and the credulous semantics). In this paper we look at the space of all possible default semantics and try to characterize the known ones by their properties, especially the va...
متن کاملSemantics for Constrained and Rational Default Logics
The default nonmonotonic reasoning was formalised by a class of logical systems: default logics (classical, justified, constrained, rational), based on the same syntax which utilises nonmonotonic inference rules: defaults, but with different semantics for the defaults. In this paper we introduce a uniform semantic characterisation for the constrained and rational extensions of a default theory....
متن کاملInstantiation Semantics of Temporal Defaults
Defaults are useful in temporal logic, e.g. in order to formalize implicit negation, the “minimal change” frame rule, and inheritance with overriding. Temporal specification formalisms usually have such defaults built-in, but the on-going discussion about the right implicit assumptions suggests that these assumptions are application-dependent and should be explicitly specified by means of defau...
